Descrizione del prodotto

The 'Blanchette' Redcurrant is a recent selection chosen for its high fruit yield with a very sweet taste, featuring a subtly balanced sugar-acid ratio. The incredibly juicy and tasty fruits start ripening from late June, allowing for harvesting until the end of July. Their pleasant taste makes them an excellent ingredient to enhance salads, complement the taste of savoury dishes, or elevate desserts. With vigorous and healthy growth, this variety is highly resistant to powdery mildew and does not suffer from premature leaf drop. Yields are regular and high. Its bushy and upright, yet compact, form reaches a height of 1.50 metres, making it well-suited for all gardens, including container cultivation. In April, it is covered with somewhat inconspicuous greenish flowers, providing food for bees and other insects. A sunny to partially shaded exposure and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil are optimal conditions for a high-yield redcurrant harvest. The shrub requires careful pruning to optimize production and fruit size.

The Redcurrant, known botanically as Ribes rubrum, is sometimes also called Gadelle or Raisinet. It belongs to the Grossulariaceae family, like the Gooseberry, from which it differs by its clustered fruits. Originating from temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and the Andes, the Redcurrant exhibits excellent cold resistance. Cultivated for a long time, it was introduced to France in the Middle Ages. Historically, in the 14th century, it was mainly used as a medicinal plant, credited by apothecaries and healers with powerful properties (febrifuge, digestive, laxative, diuretic, and depurative). In the 15th and 16th centuries, the redcurrant appeared in French gardens. In the 18th century, the Danes and the Dutch intensified redcurrant cultivation and spread it worldwide.

The Ribes rubrum 'Blanchette' is a recent Swiss selection from the Ribest range. This range consists of redcurrant varieties selected for their high yields of fleshy, sugar-rich fruits on vigorous plants resistant to diseases. It forms a bushy, non-thorny shrub with a clump-like, slightly stiff, sparsely branched growth habit, featuring soft wood with abundant pith. This very hardy bush reaches a height of 1.50 metres with a spread of 1.20 metres. The foliage is deciduous, composed of palmate, lobed, aromatic, medium green, fragrant leaves. Flowering occurs in April, with clusters of small, inconspicuous greenish to brownish flowers intensely visited by bees. Fruit production mainly occurs on one- and two-year-old branches. The harvest, starting from late June to the end of July, yields a high quantity of compact clusters with numerous round, translucent berries. When ripe, the redcurrants are bright, light yellow, filled with juicy, fruity, sweet, slightly acidic flesh containing tiny seeds.

The 'Blanchette' Redcurrant is self-fertile, requiring no companion for fruiting, although the presence of another variety nearby will increase production. Harvesting is spread out as the fruits mature, facilitated by the long clusters. A redcurrant bush can produce around 3 to 5 kg of fruits per plant depending on the age and growing conditions. Redcurrants are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, minerals, trace elements, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus, making them beneficial for health. They are among the least calorie-dense small fruits (50 kcal per 100 g). Nutrient-rich, they are delicious fresh, sprinkled with crystallised sugar. Excellent in jellies or jams, they can also be used to top tarts, make cakes, sorbets, or ice creams, accompany red meats, or add a touch to mixed salads.

In the summer, this redcurrant, with its long, pendant clusters resembling a string of pearls, will bring pleasure and enchantment to the garden. You can associate it with Blackcurrants, Raspberries, or other small fruit varieties to create a 'haie gourmande', enhancing it with its culinary attributes. In any planting, it is important to alternate species and varieties in redcurrant plantations where possible to reduce disease risks and promote pollination, even if the variety is self-fertile. It can be grown in a pot, but you must choose a container at least 40 cm high and ensure regular watering with non-calcareous water.

Piantagione e cura

Plant Ribes rosso from October to March, avoiding periods that are too cold or too wet. It appreciates ordinary soils, even poor ones, without too much limestone. Ribes rosso thrives in well-drained, fresh soil, but not constantly wet. As Ribes rosso fears heat and drought, plant it in the sun in regions north of the Loire or in partial shade in the south. Choose a location sheltered from strong winds.

When planting, space the plants 1.20m apart in all directions. For bare-root plants, soak the roots in a pralin solution to prevent air pockets between the roots and the soil. You can either prepare the pralin by mixing 1/3 very fine soil or compost, 1/3 cow dung or compost, and 1/3 rainwater, or buy it commercially. Dig a hole, incorporate well-rotted manure or compost into the soil, place the plant, and cover with soil. Water generously. Mulch the soil afterwards to retain moisture in summer.

For container cultivation: use a mix of compost and topsoil, creating a drainage layer at the bottom of the perforated pot. Feed your Ribes rosso with compost or small fruit fertilizer and water regularly to keep the substrate slightly moist but not waterlogged.

An organic fertilizer application at the start of vegetation will support fruit production and plant health. It is a versatile shrub, not very susceptible to diseases. It has some enemies, such as aphids, which can be eliminated by spraying with soapy water or a garlic decoction. In case of powdery mildew, spray with Bordeaux mixture. In June-July, protect the harvest with nets to deter birds. To get rid of raspberry worms, sometimes present on currants as well, you can sow Forget-me-nots along the plantation; they are reputed to drive them away.

In a currant plantation, as in any plantation, it is important to alternate varieties and species, when space allows: pollination will be promoted, and the spread of epidemics or diseases will be limited.

Trattamenti

Descrizione della potatura Fructification mainly occurs on one and two-year-old branches. Pruning of the red currant is important as it allows for better fruiting and facilitates harvesting. During the first two years after planting, keep only 2 to 3 buds on the main branches, if possible leaving the last outer eye to promote a spread-out growth habit. In the following years, only reduce the new shoots without touching the fruiting organs. Side shoots should be pinched above the fifth leaf in July. In February, keep only 10 to 12 main branches and remove all others at ground level; shorten the main branches by 1/3 of their length. This February pruning will allow for the renewal of one third of the stems each year. Clear the center of the clump well during pruning to allow air and light to circulate in the middle.
